Title: LED Headlight anyone?
Post by: gsxbarmy on Wednesday, 16 August 2017, 07:53 AM
Just fitted these to my Explorer, come as a pair for £32.99 - bargain. And damn they are bright!!!! Might be a bit of a tight fit getting the ballast in the headlight, but its small enough (IMO) that it could be covered in self-amalgamating tape to waterproof it just outside and under the headlight bowl possibly. As I no longer have a 14, I can't (personally) try them on a 14 (or even say that they will fit), but for the price, these are really very good. Came recommended on the Tex site I frequent over the Cyclops (on price - Cyclops bulbs are about £65-£70 each) and have to say, so far I am well impressed! Easily removable if you want to return to standard as well (plug and play).

Hi Dave,
Similar to ones I bought from China; they fitted OK on mine.

How does Dip/Full work?

I would be more inclined to buy the Philips ones though they are around £60 a pair

Twin LEDs inside the bulb - one for low, one for high. See my post further down, picture of one of the bulbs in the box prior to me fitting it, and you can see the two LED's

Well if you want to spend £27 more than you need to that's your choice. These work extremely well and have a 5 year guarantee too. Many on the Triumph forums have fitted the Cyclops bulbs at about £70 a bulb but are finding these ones work as well. Had my Tex out last night and these  are so much better than the Philips XTreme Vision and Osram Night Breaker / Night Racer bulbs, excellent spread of light.

Perhaps you can put a link up to the Philips H4 LED Headlight bulbs you refer to as I can't find them, the only ones on Powerbulbs around that price (PY21W) are not H4 Headlight replacements and not Hi/Lo (in fact it says in the description "signalling and interior lighting") - in fact none of the Philips bulbs there are Hi/Lo LED replacements (I've even checked the Philips site and they don't list LED Headlight bulbs for either cars or  bikes that I can see) - so I think you are mistaken in thinking Philips make a set of LED H4 bulbs

Interesting....

I'm resisting fitting 100/80w again as I think that was the tipping point that burnt out my last alternator. I've got fed up with HID kits that don't quite fit & crack the wires when forced into 14 headlights.

And that time of year is coming up...

Do they come in various colours like HIDs? or do they just do proper white Dave?

Just proper white, nice and bright too!! Here's a picture of a Tex with them fitted (I ordered and fitted mine after seeing this). Also they only pull 40w power, so easier on the alternator! From my (brief) ride out last night the way they work is in-line with the OEM LED headlamps I have in my car - nice and bright in other words!

Dead easy to fit as well. Take out old bulb, remove LED bulb from holder (as mentioned in the bulb instructions), fit the holder in place of the old bulb, twist the LED bulb into the holder, plug the socket into the loom bulb plug and that's it. They are also CanBus friendly (which was important for me with the Tex, but not for GSX1400's)

I would think so Jay - took a bit fiddling to get mine in, but with a bit of patience (and a more than a few cups of tea where we "restarted the fitment") they were in. Basically its hiding the ballast and the plug, on mine having put the base plate in off the LED's I could then wiggle and jiggle the ballast in under the bulb (remember I have a sealed unit here!), then fitted the LED itself, and finally finding where the plug would jiggle in (good old 3 o'clock position LOL). And Robert was then my mothers' brother!

Remember with Amazon, you can of course return them if they don't fit.....(or so I'm told)

Odd? Yes. Unusual? No.

Seen this with varying companies. Just today with fork oil from Motorex. Was going to mix their 2.5W with 5W to get my desired cSt 40. Looked at the Louis site but they don't list the 2.5W. Thought I remembered to have seen 2.5W in one of their physical shops. So went there for a look. There it was, as was the 5W. BUT, between the two was 4W! That was neither listed on the Motorex or the Louis web site and had the cSt I was going to mix myself. That little trip to the store saved me 28€ and mixing the stuff.

ADDED: Just found the 4W on the bulgarian Motorex site. The Viscosity-Mix-Chart (not to be found on their main site) can be found there as well.

They all seem to come in pairs Dave. Can you fit just one?

When I tried HIDs some of them tried to tell me I could use one & then supplied a kit where a single ballast run two lamps.

Yes Andy you can, they are two separate bulbs with separate ballasts and separate connections - here's a picture of one of the units

The chinese ones that I bought came in differant colour options, they come with a glass filter that slides over the Led if required - I didn't fit it to mine.

I've just found something out when comparing LED lamps etc, a standard H4 halogen lamp is about 1,200 lumens. So considering Barmy's suggested lamps are 7,300 lumens you can tell how much brighter they are.

Barmy, did you put the ballast/driver inside the headlight on yours? I have done but I was in two minds about it in case it got rather warm.

BTW they fit fine, the lamp unit is no longer behind the light than a H4 with the multiplug on. I had to bugger about rebending the spring clamp to hold it in, as standard it was pressing against the large fan on the back on the lamp & not letting it seat properly.

Title: Re: LED Headlight anyone?
Post by: gsxbarmy on Tuesday, 22 August 2017, 07:53 AM
Yes Andy, I did put the ballast resistor inside the shell on my Explorer, it was a bit of a tight fit, but it slipped in alongside the reflector.

When you say you had to bend the spring clamp - you did put the LED holder in with the screw heads facing forward (as per the instructions) as I had no such issues.

Glad to see it all fits though - what do you think of it now its all fitted up?

Post by: Hooli on Tuesday, 22 August 2017, 08:03 AM
Looks bright & appears to have a good beam pattern, I won't be sure till I use it in the dark which isn't happening much currently.

It did all go in as it came out the box Barmy, the problem was the bit of the wire that sticks up for you to undo the clip was pushing the back bit on the back away from the light so it didn't stay seated. I just had to reshape it a bit further out to clear that & all was good.

Left home at 4:45am today for an early start at work. I can see in the dark again! I don't think it's quite as good as my first HID but it's a hell of a lot better than the standard bulb. I can do 80-90 down roads where the normal bulb limited me to 40-50 previously.

I honestly can't remember, it fitted almost without issue. I had to tweak the wire clamp that retains the lamp unit, as the LED lamp is a slightly different shape & wasn't sitting properly. I'll check the pics I took at the time when home & let you know about the other ballast position.

I didn't take a pic of the ballast in place but looking at the size of it & length of wires in the pic I'd say it's inside the headlight bowl.

Yes they will either have cooling fans or big heat sinks. Either way you don't want to restrict the flow of air. You'd need to go underwater before enough of the wet stuff got into the headlight bowl to bother them. Don't worry about the rubber boot just leave it off.  :onya:
