Title: headlight
Post by: grog on Sunday, 13 August 2017, 06:37 PM
my headlight, k7. only comes on sometimes. searched/checked it thru. not a power supply prob. but earth. its earthed thru ecu/immobiliser unit. they are worth lots. any reason i cant just hard wire earth to light to frame. i cant see why not but all comments listened to. gsx has mitsubishi immobilizer box/ecu. just stupid price. repairing seems expensive also, cant find anyone in aus.

Hi Grog,

The wiring diagram that I looked at shows the Black/White running to a number of ccts as well as the Headlight earth but it also connects to negative of the Battery so I don't think
your light earth is switched via your ECU. Dodgy starter switch perhaps?

Cheers,
Rick

'sometimes' is a classic dodgy connection (or at least that has happened to me).

Possibly work you way through the connectors, re-seat fuse, check bulb connection in unit, and spray some contact cleaner.

Then check battery and earth connection near it. Always a good start. You may need to check your switches as well.

It's the fun times of fault finding. Generally a six pack and an afternoon in the shed.

Hope it helps

This may sound strange but check your front indicator wires in your headlight for earthing or suchlike. I fitted one of those indicator bleeper things to my 14 which went across the indicators (nowhere near the headlight, nor the headlight wiring), and it wasn't until I was out one night and switched on high beam I "found" an issue in that high beam would not work and I had a continuous beeeeeep from the repeater siren of the kit I fitted. Removed the kit and everything worked as it should. never did find out why, but the kit didn't get refitted.

sounds like my haynes wiring diagram is crap. what is the best? my biggest prob. with headlight is that it starts to work before a chance to diagnose. frustrating. thanks all.

Hi Grog,
I had also those grounding problems in my K2. I fitted extra 2.5 mm2 grounding straight from the battery. Works.

Tried wiggling the harness or the wires (take headlight out and leave bulb dangling)?

sounds like an earth problem - on My Triumph thunderbird the temp warning light used to flash when the indicators were used after the engine had warmed up - seems the earth for the temp gauge was higher then the indicator earth so it went the easy way when warm  :bugga:sloved by running a separate earth  :smile2:

I know it probably sounds stupid, but have you tried fitting a new bulb?
I always like to start off really basic and then go from there if it still doesn't work.

Good Luck :onya:
