Title: Anyone on here have an ARAI RX7-V
Post by: Basil Brush on Saturday, 05 August 2017, 07:59 PM
Righto - I'm not a member of any other biking forum - but, I'd like to pick fellow RX7-V owners brains if I may...

For the past 20 years as I can remember, I've had a Lazer, three ROOF's and two AGV K3's. The Lazer was budget no frills. But, did the job. ROOF's by far the best. Very quiet too. And the two K3's. again good.

So, I thought I'd treat myself to a ARAI. I never thought my head could be worth £699. But, hey ho...

Well, dunno about fellow opinions. But, I find it loud. Similar to my (£129 AGV K3). But, not a patch on the ROOF's. For something that costs fivefold, that's bad, bordering on rubbish.

But, my biggest problem is the visor locking system. Who the hell thought of that? As you can appreciate, I never shut the visor shut in the shop. I've only used it twice - I simply cannot get the visor to open with gloved hands. I'm left in the dilemma of hoping the lights turn to green - or slowly suffocate due to poor ventilation. In the meantime I've gone back to my K3. Shame when I have a £700 lid sat around redundant.

Is it me - but, for the life of me. It will not open. I'm tempted to contact ARAI direct as I fear my lid could be a Friday-night-job. But, I thought I'd pick other owners first.

I've done a quick google search. And I've read several comments again about this locking system. Some bypassing it - and pulling it all off!

Many thanks in anticipation...

BB.

I've used Arai for 33 years without any problems, although they are a bit noisy.  I think they have recently changed the locking mechanism so cannot comment on that type but if it's the old type and wont open take it to a dealer and have them sort it out for you, it should open very easily with just your thumb fitting into the grove and push up.

I just bought an Arai Rebel, about £450 here with some discount and a crap exchange rate.
Being completely inexperienced in these matters I was looking for something good though not necessarily 'the best' so after doing some reading I was thinking Arai or Shoei.
In the shop the fit and comfort was good and importantly I could get my glasses on.
Okay, my first ride in many years was only 12 miles. Weather was hot, about 35 shade temp. I found the ventilation was excellent....in fact I closed the vents to about halfway.
As for the visor, on my helmet it sort of locks closed with a click. There is a little groove where you have to put your finger to 'un click' it. I didn't have any problems but then I was only wearing thin gloves.
I suppose time will tell as regards to how good it is or isn't.

I  own an Rx7, the latest in a long line of Arai's. I've never found anything else that fits my head as good, and a flying face plant onto the pavement a few years ago convinced me of the quality.

If the visor won't open easily I'd nip back to the dealer and get it looked at. It should just pop out with thumb or finger on the tab on the bottom left of the visor. Worth checking that the visor is fitted correctly too, as they can be a cow to get in right.

Good luck with it.

Many thanks for all the replies - much appreciated.

Definitely faulty. I'm reluctant to go back to the supplying dealer, as they were fibbing to me of the odd occasion. We are off to BSB is a fortnight. I'll hunt out the Arai service truck.

Oddly enough, at a bike meet today. I only saw one rider with the same lid. His latch was missing. His broke off, and he hated the visor locking system that deeply. He prefers it without. On a few occasions he was unable to open the visor and ended up nearly suffocating. Scandalous on a lid that cost upwards of £700. I only wish I'd have known this earlier...

@Basil Brush
I wouldn't wait 2 weeks Brian, I'd go straight back to the dealer, fibbing or not. If they really were fibbing then tell them you will be visiting Trading Standards, as they clearly have misled you, if not (assuming you paid by credit card), speak to your credit card company as over £100 you are covered I believe for faulty goods under the Consumer Credit Act  http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/regulation/consumer-credit-act

Some debt cards are covered by that too, Barclays for one (I think).

Plus if you used your overdraft at the time then you were buying on credit & covered as well.

Righto - got to the bottom of it all. Visor not shutting at all.

I went out Friday. Came home with streaming eyes. Missus brush (ex nurse) knew something was wrong. Been out today - and I'm thinking my old AGV fivefold cheaper is quieter...

Anyway after countless times stripping and checking the visor mechanism. It does not close fully. hence the noise and wind blast. It will only close fully if you use a bare hands and with four fingers pull it down forcibly. With gloves it's a no-no. That's why the visor locking lever will not work as it's not touching the thing. Hence at traffic lights you are slowly suffocating as it's difficult to open the visor shield.

I'm going to go back this week ASAP. Dealer has offered to send it off for me. 2-3 weeks timeline. I said that's not acceptable. Especially with autumn not a long distance away. And I would not qualify for a refund/exchange. yes- their words not mine.

Anyway, dealer is a large on-line dealer. A three hour round trip on a good day. I originally ordered the lid over the phone. Checked it was in - and asked them to stick it under the counter in my name. I'm on my way...

Gets there - they sold it. I took it well. No ranting and a raving. They said they'd sold it overnight. Fair point. But, they had retrieved it from under the counter - as I was on my way.

Cue fibbing. I'm on the phone about this lid. "Oh we remember you - we sold it as you were on your across way to us". Nice. thanks for that I thought. A lie is always difficult to keep track of.

They offered to look after me in getting me another. No offer to compensate me for a three hour wasted trip/and bridge toll's. And when lid arrived. They skanked me for £10 postage too...!! That went on the bill. Not good.

I'll be calling this week. They were very unhelpful on the phone later on today. It was just like talking to a robot. And yes - I paid by paypal over the phone.

Many thanks for all her and advice so far.

Get on the phone to paypal, they charge enough for their service, make them earn it.
