Post by: Del on Monday, 03 July 2017, 12:16 AM
So in my attempt to keep my bike standard   I decided to do the head stoke bearings all wnet fairly easily and actully got it done s lot quicker than I thought

I changed the top and bottom yokes to ones I painted black and thought fook it Ill  put on a black headlight and a set of Satin black clock surrounds - standard all the way  :happy1: :happy1:

Del nice work
How easy were they to take off .
I was thinking of doing mine ,but was a bit unsure of how .and it the forks needed anything to keep them true ,while the yoke holding were of the bike

It was fairly easy especially as I had spare set of yokes -

Bottom bearing was the 3 piece one and I used a dremel with a cutting disc to cut a groove (not all the way through) and used a cold chisel to get it off the stem - this took about 10 mins in all - the seat in the bottom of the frame neck I did something the same with the dremel and then used a heavy drift located on the lip and chapped with a hammer to get it out

Top bearing a lot easier as just the bearing seat to remove and a drift in the lip - chap with a hammer and out it came

refit - top bearing seat - I did the 12 6 3 9 method to get it located with a light panel hammer and once lever with the neck I then used the old seat to drive the seat home

refit bottom bearing seat - same as above

getting the bearing onto the stem - I put a long 1/2 extension into the vice and the bottom yoke sat well on and using the old bearing I worked the new bearing onto the stem - I used a but of heavy steel bar as a drift and hit this with a hammer working the 12 6 3 9 method again to get it to seat

I recommend greasing the bearings before hand and getting a new bottom seal for the bottom yoke as I destroyed mine getting the old one off (Part Number Steering Stem Lower Seal 51644-12C00)

I had the forks off the yokes so was a lot lighter to work with - I just made sure they sat even when refitted and ran the spindle in and out a few times to make sure everything IMO was sitting as it should be

Very nice Del, I've done exactly the same myself with clocks and headlight :onya:

If you wanted Black Horns :) there are some on 'wish' for £4 at the mo, I've ordered some myself so will post on here once I have them.

Cheers
