Some of you will know that I had surgery on my right foot earlier this year and have now recovered from it ok.
Since last September I have been getting severe pain in the left hip/groin area..And it's been getting progressively worse recently.
Had a trip to the Doc's on Wed's this week. He sent me for X-Rays to confirm what I had feared..My left hip joint is worn out and needs replacing.
Now, is there anyone else on here that has had the op done and is still riding?
My concern is that I won't be able to continue to ride a bike afterwards
To say that I'm feeling down at the moment is a bit of an understatement, to be honest I'm crapping it.
sorry to hear this buddy but hopefully you'll get fixrd asap and finally get back to full fitness asap
good luck buddy
Sure all will be ok, best to ask the consultant :smile2:
Steve, you should be ok. Mate if mine had it done, was up and about 1 week later and back to riding - albeit gently - a few weeks later. It all depends how quick you heal, also the consultant who operates has to judge at what point - if something untoward did happen when you are riding - that you would be no worse off than if you hadn't had the op. Unfortunately, everyone heals at different rates, so can't say when you would ride again, but there is no reason that I know if that would prevent you.
When I had the 3 discs replaced in my neck a few years back, they told me it would be 2 years before I would ride again. 6 months later with the consultants blessing I was back on my 14. Still took me another 6-9 months to work my strength up in my neck, but I did it. A simple rule (I learnt through previous ops) was not to overdo the physio, little and often works best. For me walking was my best physio, short walks eventually building up to some quite long daily walks.
So will you ride again? Yes. How long will it take? Who knows, but your a positive bloke Steve, so I know damn well you'll work at it sensibly until you do mate. Just don't rush it.
Father in law had it done and was told he would be able to do all the thinks he could before the op but he had complications because he didn't stick with his physio. It's important to keep up the physio to get to full recovery.
My mum's had both hips done and it's been brilliant for her. Recovery wasn't that long either if I remember!
My advice is just listen to doctors orders regarding healing/recovery etc.......us men have a habit of thinking we're all "superman" and try to do things too soon :)
Hope it goes well Froudy!
Gaz
Good luck and do a show your told it's better to do it the first time than to have a set back trying to hard and be put back weeks mate so slowly slowly catch a monkey as they say good luck
Had New Yoshimura Hip last year certainly wasn't riding/healing anywhere near as quick as Mr Barmys mate!!
But can certainly say I am back on board ma Standard 14 and heading for The TT come Friday Froudy!!
So all will b well!!
Have heard pretty good stories from people having had hip surgery. Sure you will be the same. :onya:
BG....be very interested to hear of your experiences at and going to the TT.
Have the greatest time.
Froudy!
Next door neighbour had both done and one knee - he is the bionic man - and do'n just fine at 68!
Keep on truck'n
:hat:
Stan
Sure you will be fine & good luck with it all.
Quick update..
After finding out that the wait to see an orthopaedic surgeon on the NHS was 30 weeks, I paid for a Private consultation which I got within 10 days!!
He has agreed that the only option is to replace the hip joint. He's bumped me onto the urgent list with the NHS and I have my first Pre-op on Aug 21st, second one on Oct 5th and then should get it done within 3 months...Nice new ceramic hip and hopefully the end of this pain!!
sounds like a great result and as a couple boys said take it easy do what you need to do physio wise, wishing you all the best mate
Good result Steve, soon be back up on the 14 with that nice new hip!
good luck pal hope it works out better than mine, sorry to put a downer on it,but its not allways BRILLIANT, hopefully yours will be brilliant, but in my case it wasnt, good luck with it pal :onya:
No personal experience, but my father has had his done.
He's in his "senior" years and was soon back to work, he's a farmer.
He hasn't ridden much since he had his Triumph Tiger Cub (new) but you wouldn't bet him he couldn't !
Thats nice news Tony. Its great to see our fathers mobile and doing things they couldnt before surgery.
My now 84 yo Dad had a hip replacement a few years ago after op he dropped 4 shots off his golf handicap because he wasn't in any pain. All done under private health care around $25k Aus was the final bill the bloody joint was half of that. Doctor asked him to use a cart at golf so he didn't wear out the joint too quickly :rofl3:
GSXKING 3:^)
Chris
youll be ok mate. my mate , 70 yrs. has had new titanium knee, new hip, gauze put in for hernia. physio for sciatica, since xmas. doesnt ride but back playing golf. youll be fine. after care is the secret.
Hope they don't reschedule this one :imrgreen:
Speedy recovery
As long as you can still get your leg over :smile2:
I had my knee done 2 weeks ago and the way it's feeling at the moment I can't see me on a bike again this year, which is a bit awkward as I'm due to ride to the IOM in September.
I know everyone heals at a different rate but after going to physio last week I seem to have taken a step back.
Going again this Thursday so will see what happens.
People that have had it done rave about how good it is, so fingers crossed it loosens up soon.
Aparently hips are a doddle.
Good luck Steve, if it works as well as ceramic dics you'll be better, faster, stronger than before :onya:
Cheers
Red
Quick update..

Surgery on the wrong side did happen to me. Done by the chief surgeon/medical director of a hospital in Switzerland.
Sorry Froudy, but shit happens. May your guardian angel be more attentive than mine.
Had some eye stuff done recently. The specialist says to me" which eye are we doing?" I say the left one. They say which is your lerft eye? I say this one, pointing to my left eye.......they stick a piece of tape on the left side of my face !!
Didnt make me feel very confident if they dont even know their left from their right. :whatever:
Kiwifruit, they would certainly get a big vote of confidence from me. They did it exactly right! :onya: :onya: :onya:
Have to say Andre there were two of them in the room with them both checking off with each other what was being done. They were very professional even though i make light of the way its done, as you say they did it 100% correct. I am grateful for their skill.
Given the comments above Froudy, maybe write "Wrong One" on the RH hip just in case :happy1:
Good idea Barmy.....
Belt and braces :onya:
Not so sure this is a good idea, as they may take "Wrong One" to mean that it needs to be replaced with a "Right One" :whatever:
Maybe a dotted line.....CUT HERE ??
Just have 'em both off & be done with it - can't go wrong there . . .

I'll just be glad to get it done now. The pain is unbearable and I'm struggling to walk and work now. Still riding but very very painful.
Quick update..
I had the operation last Monday..16th.
Came home on Thursday afternoon. It hurts like hell still, but I'm getting around the house ok on crutches. Getting out of bed in the morning takes a while as the joint has stiffened up overnight. Washing and dressing is a nightmare. You're not allowed to bend down so boxers, trousers and slippers etc have to be put on using one of those pick up/gripping thingies.
You basically have to learn how to do everything again.
It's early days, but it'll improve as each day passes. Be glad to get myself off the painkillers too :onya:
hiya buddy
glad the op went well
you just needing to get better .
time will help so slowly but surely you'll recover over a bit of time.
goid luck with it all and hopefully you'll be back on the road next year .
keep us in touch on your progress :boogie:
Pleased you are on the mend now.
Time will fly bye and you will soon be back riding that fun Motorway over the severn to England! :smile2:
Glad all went well Steve, soon you'll be able to service the bike with one of those pickup thingies :rofl2:
Take care bud
Good to hear all went well... soon you'll be buzzing about on one of those gsx zimmer thingies! :rofl2:
Wish you a speedy recovery
Thanks guys :onya:
Youll be good soon, those recovery rules a whole new life. Good luck mate.
Happy healing Froudy :hat:
Get well soon Froudy, I'm sure you will quickly be back to normal.
i do hope not as i don't think any of us are normal lol
back to his old self would be just fine i think.
if owt like big geordi maybe a tad faster due to a lightweight hip too.
:stir:
Who the hell wants to be normal :whistling:
Get riding soon Froody :onya:
yep.. get well soon :boogie:
Froudy, my mate had new titanium knee in feb, hernia done march, hip replaced in june. hes had a bad year. he rang today, i said ill come around. not home, away with caravan. been gone two weeks another two to go. off fishing. knee and hip both perfect. thought this might brighten you up.
Thanks for all the encouragement guys..It's a bit easier today :onya:
Grog..Your mate HAS been through the mill this hear for surgery
One of the nurses in hospital said that I'd be dancing again in no time..I said that this would be a bonus, as I couldn't dance before the operation :rofl3: :rofl3:

HaHa, I tried tampax cos they said I could swim with one fitted, did'nt work. :whistling:
:rofl2: :rofl2:
Hope all is well Froudy, not liking the sound of pain killers I didn't take any after leaving the Hospital u will find ways of doing various things good luck to ya!! If your end result is anything like mine its well worth everything :boogie:
You must have a very high pain threshold Big Geordie.
I'm nearly two weeks post op now and I'm taking max dosage of Codeine and Paracetemol..It's still very feckin' sore.
Got my first physio appointment at 13:30 today..It's going to be fun and games just getting in the car to get there. Tried it once already and thought I'd dislocated the hip joint..I didn't half swear a lot
youre lucky mate, my mate wasnt allowed in car for 10 weeks. he was stuck home all that time.
That would drive me insane Grog, being cooped up in the house that long :furious:
I had physio yesterday which went ok. I'm now only using one crutch to hobble around the house. Everything is just such hard bloody work though..Getting dressed etc.
The joint totally seizes up overnight and it takes a while for me to get mobile when I wake up. I guess it's early days though and it'll improve with time.
you will be all good. mate has now gone on 2 th k caravan trip. no probs he told me. my hips often seize up/ huge pain on bike. legs fwd wuold be good but ill give up riding before i buy a harley. my mates rocket has legs fwd, unreal bike, but just too heavy. i love that bike. except for parking and tyre wear, id have one tomorrow. replace the scrape bolts with titanium, you should see the white sparks, 10m long. looks amazing.
It's been a while since I updated this..
I'm now 6 weeks post op. It's healing up nicely, but it's a bit slow going to be honest. Did I ever mention that I'm not the most patient of people
I've cut right down on painkillers now..4 a day at most. The last couple of days I've been out and about walking without even a stick..Can only manage about an hour before it starts getting painful and uncomfortable..Early days yet though.
Doc signed me off work for another 8 weeks today. Hoping to get back in about 7 if he OK's it as I go onto half pay after 7.
The best news is that I did actually manage(Very carefully) to swing a leg over the 1400 and actually sit on it today :imrgreen: :imrgreen:
great news things are progressing nicely.
sounds like your getting on just fine and as long as you keep getting better fantastic.
keep taking it easy buddy and hopefully not long till you are fit enough to swing your leg over the bike and ride a short run but everything in good time.
:onya:
Just thought about you yesterday as 33 year old Manuel Charr, outfitted with two artificial hip joints, won the WBA heavy weight titel.
Good on ya Froudy.
Great news Froudy. Nice to hear you've swung a leg over........When that sun breaks through you'll be raring to go. :clapping:
Hang in there Steve, great you are making such good progress, every day things improve, unfortunately time as a healer won't be rushed, when I had the discs in my neck replaced, it was 7 mo this before I was allowed back on my bike - but still beat the 9-12 my consultant reckoned. Just don't try to rush it, for me walking was a great way to get fit again, extending how far I walked as my body allowed.
Soon be up and about again and out on the 14!
glad you swung a leg over, was it just the bike? told b4 about my mate, hes doing fine with new hip and knee. playing golf, mows his lawn, 5 times a week, ex greenkeeper. just been away in caravan , fishing etc. he was 10 weeks from memory, before he could ride in car. all good. hang in mate.
Great to hear you are on the mend Froudy. Do it right the first time & don't rush it (I'm one who would try to rush it & probably pay the price)
No rush with the bad weather over your way now anyway.
Thanks for all the comments and encouragement guys..Much appreciated :onya:
I just got next years shift pattern from work and it looks like I'll be starting back mid January..Best make sure all my thermals and waterproofs are up to scratch for the 70 mile daily mid winter commute..Can't wait :boogie: :boogie:
@Belty How's your knee doing? Fit as a fiddle again I hope :onya:
Quick update..
I returned to work on Jan 22nd for 2x12 hour night shifts. I took the car for these two as I knew I'd be knackered after having not worked for 3 months. A good move as it was hard going.
I've just finished another three day shifts...Sunday and Monday I rode the bike..First time since my op.
No problems at all riding thank goodness. Even though it was dark, cold and raining it was good to be back on two wheels again :boogie: :boogie:
Straight after work last night I attended a big bike theft meeting in Bristol. I drove the car as I didn't want to risk parking the bike in the area the meeting took place.
I'll cover the meeting here...

Glad your back on the 14 and in work - hopefully your jokes will improve now !! lol :smile2:

Great news Steve, just take it careful buddy!
A great story to read from the beginning. :)
Make sure you keep up ALL the exercises the physio gave you.
I had an op on my spine 5 years ago, still do the exercises the physio gave me every day. It works so well I am coming to the end of a total restoration of a French farm house. A mate came out last year for a few days, we installed the last 8 ceiling beams. He could not believe I had put the other 12 in single handed given my historic "glass back".
Following good advice you could take up running, my recommendation would be, follow the advice, and just enjoy getting your leg over!
( the 14 you perves!)
Thanks lil :onya:
Getting my leg over (The 14 ) was VERY painful to start with :mwink:
Lets see some photo's of your farmhouse project please :onya:
Well done Froudy, riding in frozen conditions, back to work, great achievements. Getting your leg over, now thats another level again. 👍👏🤣

I'm still riding, but the Arthritis is really getting bad in all my joints now..Hands are really bad. Even the hip that I had replaced is causing me a lot of pain again.
I think my riding AND working days are sadly numbered now :frustrated: :frustrated:
Ref joint replacement, my Dad is 90 next Feb and he had his right hip replaced 2 days ago. He had the left done in 1993, left knee in 2003 and right knee in 2012!!..I swear he's bionic :imrgreen:
