Title: Bank Holiday Traffic
Post by: Notty on Saturday, 27 May 2017, 06:57 AM
Visited a mate in Chippenham for lunch and left there at 1.30pm to travel on the M4 back to Cardiff some 60 miles. From Bath at junction 18 past Bristol to the second severn crossing 3 lanes of stationary traffic so had to filter for over 20 miles FFS - Then Junction 23A to Junction junction 27 another 3 lanes of stationary traffic some 9 miles - so glad I was on the GSX or I think I would have jumped off the bridge - In a bizarre way I enjoyed the ride , forcing the cars out of my way with a blip of the throttle and to be fair most did move when they heard or saw me.  :smile2:

Makes me think back when I had this old scooter. When we still had snowy winters this thing was great. I called it my snowmobile. It's tires had huge studs and when the snow was deep, the bottom rested on the fresh snow. Uphill, where no car made it, I cruised in slalom between the stuck cars. On the flat I passed them with 70 km/h. Crazy? Yes! I had total confidence in myself and the scooter. Always rode my motorcycles (and scooters) in every condition. My new 14 will however be spared this experience. The one accident I ever had was in a car. I don't like cars!!!

Oh, forgot. I had a number of falls with my bicycle. Still love it though.

I normally avoid riding on public holidays.
Too many tourists, day trippers, folk towing boats to the dams or cops having clamp downs due to our high death rate. I'd rather stay home and work on the bike or do jobs on my house.

I made the exception on New Year's Day, middle of our Summer here.
I was on the road at 4.30am and out to the fun area by the time the sun was up.

Did one lap to check for cops and dead roo's and road condition, then a few runs with the pace REALLY turned up. The place was deserted. Didn't see a single person. Was very strange, like one of those post apocalypse movies !

Sorry for the lack of a 1400, but deserted roads and no cops temped to let the King stretch it legs.

Notty ..
I travel from Newport to Bristol on the M4 three times a week for work..Coming home on a Friday night it's always like that...Obviously worse on a Bank Holiday Friday though.

I'm just glad I'm on the GSX and NOT in the car!!

Hey Tony
Interesting you have to keep a lookout for road kill as  I had to swerve a dead fox early on Tuesday morning which gave me a proper fright!
A roo I'd imagine would be a big old lump, do you see many road kill Roos ?

Cheers

The roads I do on a regular basis North of Brisbane you're pretty much guaranteed to see road kill. Dead roo's few possums, snakes and the occasional Koala. Most of the roo's are normally on the shoulder or grass verge, either someone has moved them or they got punted off the road. The ones you don't see you normally smell ! A big roo sat in the Aussie sun for a week is really on the nose!!!

It's not that common to dodge big dead stuff in the road, but the odds are higher if you're out early before most of the traffic.

Most folk make a drama about Aussie wildlife, Snakes, Spiders, Sharks, Crocs, Jellyfish etc, I've worked outdoors and cleared a lot of land and spent time camping and bush walking. My two real close "Oh-F#ck!" / "near death" moments were both at speed on the bike with Roo's that decided they had to cross the road or deciding they didn't really want too.

One that took me by surprise was up North near Daintree, Wedge Tail Eagles feeding on road kill, huuuuuge b#stards don't get off the ground real quick with a gut full. That was a bit too close for me and them!
