Title: Totally new
Post by: NI-Mike1973 on Friday, 19 May 2017, 04:55 AM
Hi all just passed DA test and bought a GSX  all in the last week.  Have 2 questions
1.  The Thommohawk gear indicator conversion how long does It take to do and rough cost.
2.  Just had fork seals replaced and one still weeping a bit is there a Bed in period or are they fitted wrong or is there another possible issue.  Was going to do the job myself following GSXBarmy's excellent instruction thread.  But i wanted to get job done quick so I could get out and about.
Have never joined a forum before but after reading aforementioned thread and looking at others I really liked what I saw.
Also I can ramble on a bit  :)
Thanks
Mike

Welcome to the forum.

1. For the most accurate answers ask ThommoHawk directly: paul.thompson@perminatech.co.uk
2. What coldhands says.

Welcome from down under Mike.
Seals should not weep. Seals should seal straight away.
I do not keep my bike in the highest state of clean and polished, but I do make sure my fork staunchions are always clean.

Welcome Mike

As others have already said, you need to contact Thommohawk directly regards your clocks, much will depend on what else he has on at the time.

Regards fork seals. It's not unknown for there to be a slight weep of oil ocassionally after changing a seal, as the seal beds in. But a couple of questions - did you use OEM seals? Is the fork stanchion itself unblemished?

Experience over the years has shown that in many cases, after market seals can leak quite quickly, hence why on here we always recommend using OEM seals. However if there is a slight blemish in the stanchion itself over the area it travels - for instance pitting - then this can quickly lead to the seal starting to leak again.

If both answers are that you used OEM seals and that the stanchion is good, then we would need to look elsewhere. Either the seal was poorly fitted by the place you got to do the job (perhaps nipped), or its a faulty seal (although for me that would be a first to hear of that with an OEM seal). Or, there is a bit of dirt behind the seal - which can readily be fixed.

Let's look at those solutions. First if you gently prise up the dust seal (stanchion can remain in place for this), just check for any dirt or muck that may have got trapped between the dust seal and the oil seal. If there is clean it up, replace the dust seal and see if over the next few trips there is still oil showing. If after 500 miles of wiping away oil you are still getting oil showing then the oil seal is SNAFU and needs to be replaced. The other thing you could do whilst the dust seal is off is clean under the oil seal with one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motion-Pro-Seal-Mate-Fork-Tool-Motocross-Enduro-Suzuki-RM-80-85-100-125-250-500-/152394743824?hash=item237b6f4010:g:y4EAAOSwmfhX7TkO (don't worry what the title says, these work on ALL bikes). If there is any mucky then caught under the oil seal this will clear it.

The only other alternative is to take the bike back to the shop where you had the seals done and get them to replace that seal again. Frankly that would be my first port of call, as you paid them to do a job, and they have a duty of care. Which if one is leaking again, they should fix FOC (assuming a faulty seal). I wouldn't wait personally but would go straight around there now, as if you wait a week or two, then they could easily say it not down to them.

Let us know how you get on

Have same issue last year. Kannerdog 1x1 have same issue too.
It was due to the quality of the seals (NOK). After that issue Kanerdog 1x1 find replacement by SKF. Works great. No more problem with front forks.

For example:

Quick update on fork seals.  Went back to garage and told the boss and mechanic that one fork seal was still leaking,  they immediately said that i needed a new stantion  as my one was damaged (if its damaged why didn't they tell me when they were doing the job first time).  i did not want to enter into a debate with them so left it at that.
i am going to buy 2 OEM seals and do the job right following GSXbarmy's thread, then i know its done right and if the stantion is damaged i can see it and do what is necessary myself.
it was only due to my impatientness  in wanting to get out and about that i paid someone to do it(i have always worked on my own cars myself).
so lesson learned.
thank you all for your advice and warm welcome.

My FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT ADVICE .... buy SKF seal kit, no original (NOK) or much worst (NAK)
My second advice .... no problem diagnose damage tubes (damage chrom on the functional surface of the gufer)
And can it leak due to so many worn out bushings too.
