Title: Throttle lock - Kaoko
Post by: Gra Har on Sunday, 14 May 2017, 08:04 PM
Hi gang, is anyone using a throttle lock, if so, what type? I have been doing a bit of research on the kaoko lock and it seems like a decent bit of gear and not too noticeable on the handle bar, but at $159au plus postage it is a bit expensive. There is not one listed for the 14, but I sent off an email last week to this shop and they replied saying the SUZ200 will fit ok, this one is listed to fit the Busa as well.

Hi, Yep I have a Brake Away cruise control fitted on mine.  Bit fiddly setting it up but works well & is fully adjustable to how you like it set.
A wee touch on the front brake & it's disengaged.

I only use it on longer / straight runs to give the hand & wrist a rest.  Was fairly pricey, but then it's a quality piece of kit.

I've not seen the one in the link before, how do they disengage?  The good thing about the Brake Away is it's intuitive & disengages with a touch of (front) brake (as cars do) or by pushing the disengage button.

It's expensive UNTIL you compare with with a proper after market vaccuum operated cruise control- which while awesome - kicks it at around a grand !

Disengages by rolling off the throttle, so me thinks one would have to very aware about that and only use on straight open quiet roads, like we have in outback Australia. Could be dangerous in high traffic locations.

i have a kaoko throttle lock i fitted 6/7 years go, i use it on highways or long stretches of roads and it work great, i had to buy a longer screw and thicker oring to make it work

but they are illegal because they don t deactivate  when you use the brake or clutch

I had one on a Harley, standard equipment, factory fitted.
Very crude. It was a wheel under the throttle, when you turned it it tightened
onto the twist grip cable area and just made a sticky throttle that didn't snap back.

It was mildly entertaining that I could slide back onto the pillion seat on long motorway journeys, over take cars, and pretend to scream in fear.  Personally it's nothing I'd want on another bike.

Mate has a BMW with PROPER cruise control, it will hold a set speed up and down hills and is just the same as my car one (which I use a lot) This system I'd like on a big tourer, less of a personal health thing and more for my licences health on loooooong rides.

kiwi col, yours sounds the best. i remember old hardlys that had no return spring, you just turned throttle to where you wanted, it stayed there. i use throttle rocker, brilliant 2 dollar invention, had one forever. can rest hand, just use bottom of palm. all i use. have 2 cars and ute with cruise control, never used ever.

I used one of those little palm levers to hold the throttle whilst I stretched my fingers, it was a bit of relief if arm pump set in. I have the cruise control on the BMW now and find it excellent.

I've got & used one of those little palm gadgets as well. Yep for the price ya can't beat them, but the thing I have installed now is way different piece of kit, like comparing a candle to an LED spotlight, yep they both work & do a job, just what sort of job do you want done though.

Details are scarce on their website - even without the details I would not be too keen on using a heel operated throttle as you have nowhere near the same sensitivity as your hand - and at over $400??

Think I would go the hand paddle.

Pretty happy with the Oxford paddle thingy. Just lets me relax my hand on long rides.
Meant to take it off when I did a track day., forgot to and it never once got in the way.

paddles, throttle rockers whatever you name them the best invention ever. mine is permanent. never gets in the way. wish id had one on my ducatis years ago, they had arnie schwarzennegerr type return springs, clutch even worse. spoilt these days. i nearly gave up riding, numb n aching arm on bikes, mainly dukes. throttle rocker cured it. have a spare in shed, original over 5 yrs now, all for 5 bucks. i love good inventions. fog off mask is second best, another favourite. it should be a must for you cold climate people. have a google and then ill tell a way to make it better. sorry off subject, old peoples minds do wander.

I think a fog off mask is one of those masks which goes across your nose and mouth?

update on my decision, decided no on the kaoko, instead I watched a youtube clip on a makeyourown throttle lock and me being a practical sort of a bloke, I did just that. I made the J hook out of a heavy duty black plastic coated coat hanger. Haven't tested it yet, hopefully the weather will clear on Sunday for a test. I also went to buy (on ebay) one of those $8.00 wrist rests as in photo on a post on this thread, but would not let me pay on paypal. So yesterday while driving past the local bike shop in my taxi I called in and they ordered me one in for the sane price - glad to give my local bike shop the business instead of ebay.

i tried a Kaoko on my GTR - didn't really like it...

i have an Omnicruise or Omni Cruise and its brilliant.  10 seconds sees it on and off and you can swap from bike to bike...  failsafe...
Used it on my GTR for a fast 1.5 day run from Cambs to Catalunya and it was a god send.

100% recommend

they are on ebay but this is the Co

:onya: Ok been for a test ride today to see how my home made throttle lock would work.
Ah the old bloke's still got it :jack:

Just a piece of plastic coated heavy duty coat hanger wire about the diamenter  of a welding electrode carefull moulded around the grip has worked a treat.
