I have a K5 quite recently purchased now having starting problems.
By the corrosion on certain areas it certainly looks like it has spent a lot of time standing and probably in damp or humid conditions.
When I turn the ignition on with the kill switch in the on position the Fi light will keep on flashing and not start but the bike turns over. If I turn the ignition off then back on again with the kill switch in the off position then flick it on the Fi light usually drops out and I can fire the bike up.
Recently after giving the bike a vigorous wash the Fi light just wouldn't drop out no matter what I did and I couldn't start the bike full stop. The following morning the bike started up ok. I've checked and got the c42 code come up.
Any ideas?
C42 is the anti-theft ignition switch signal.
Just fyi Bob, the early K5's had a recall for the anti-theft ignition aerial collar (which Suzuki (at least in the UK) still honour) and it sounds like yours may not have been recalled to have that replaced? I'd suggest giving your Country Suzuki importer a call about it, and see if they too honour the warranty such that you can get it replaced free of charge in a dealership
It's a Japanese market bike and then imported into Thailand in 2008 so a definite no no for warranty at what passes for a Suzuki dealer locally.
Can I just buy one and fit it myself or does it need to be coded to my bike?

I believe you can just buy one and fit it, it doesn't have to be coded as its the key that is coded to the ECU, the antenna just transmits the signal. The part I believe you need is part 10 in the diagram below, which is the aerial collar around the ignition key. I say believe because I have never changed it (mine was a K7), so hopefully someone on here can confirm or they can advise which part it is you need to change. Its interesting why it says what it does, you will need to check parts locally with your dealer.
You do (very occassionally) find them on eBay as well. Whilst it says this is off a K7, the K5/6/7 models were all the same, only the paintwork changed

You might want to check eBay locally or the Japanese eBay to see if you can find one locally maybe secondhand?
Thanks gsxbarmy. Have now ordered the part. Will let you know how I get on when it arrives.
How did this story end? Did the collar work for your bike? I have same problems right now, error C42.
Hi
The story ended with that Suzuki had that recall campaing about antiteft collar, i towed my bike in our local Suzuki dealer and they replaced the collar and now it works like a charm!
